Am back in France, based in the Provence region in preparation for riding up Mt Ventoux. Am staying in St Andre Les Alpes, a small town not far from the Gorges du Verdon & surrounded by beautiful cycling country.
I rode up the Col des Robines today, a short punchy climb from the town of Barrême.
What struck me immediately was the amount of wind exposure on the climb. There was a strong headwind descending the Col & a generous tail wind on the return trip, which has reinforced the importance of correctly timing the ascent up Ventoux as the wind blows in excess of 90km/h 240 days of the year at the summit.
Before the end of this coming weekend the plan is to climb 5 more Cols (ranging from 1148m to 1708m) before attempting to ride up Ventoux (1910m) this Monday (June 7).
